Mother's Day

Paul's mom started knitting a few months ago, and she's a bit tentative about trying socks, so for Mother's Day this year, I'm forcing her into it.

I got her a Beginner's Sock-Knitting Kit containing: basic sock pattern in a protective cover, Knitting Vintage Socks for further inspiration, chunkier sock yarn for quick knitting, size 3 dpns, darning needles, tape measure, row counter, and a small crochet hook for this inevitable dropped stitches. And also a skein of KnitPicks dye-your-own sock yarn, which I forgot to include in the package, but will give to her seperately. I hope she'll like everything.

Here it is all wrapped up and ready for gifting.

As for my own mom, my sister and I are giving her a gift certificate to a day spa. She's lately started getting weekly pedicures, and enjoys them, so we thought this way she could go and try some more treatments; maybe a facial, manicure, whatever. I know I would enjoy it.

Happy Mother's Day, everyone!

I'm surprised - I would think that 32" circulars would work for magic loop... I've done something similar (improvising) on a fair isle sleeve in the past with something that size-ish but I've technically never followed instructions for magic looping socks. The gift for your M-I-L looks lovely! Such a great idea...

Chunky sock yarn is a fantastic idea! Starting out with tiny needles and tiny yarn can be a bit much, so this is a friendlier introduction to the art of the sock. And, of course, they're pink and stripey. Nice choice. :-)

Both Mother's Day gifts sound fabulous!
I use 32 inch circ for magic loop, with no problems at all.

That looks like a great starter sock kit. I am in full agreement with your choice of thicker sock yarn. I knit my first pair with Cascade 220 and they're bulky to wear, but it was a great way to learn.

What a wonderful daughter and daugther_in-law (enabler- in-law!) you are.... plus how fun to be able to be able to compare notes on sock yarns and knit together. I'm sure mom will enjoy her pampering too!

Hi there - I'm not sure if you read the "yarn harlot" or not (www.yarnharlot.ca/blog), but her post right now references a woman who is trying to get Dulaan project entries from all 50 states and all 10 provinces. She is still missing Oklahoma (and Arkansas). Since you're in Tulsa, I thought I'd pass this along in case you (or one of your blog readers) are interested in helping out!
