More Yarn?!? Yay!

I ordered some Shimmer from Knitpicks to make a Clapotis, and it finally arrived today. Mmmm, it's so yummy and luscious!

I also got a package from my One Skein Secret Pal! Beautiful Lorna's Laces Shepard Worsted in my favorite colors! Thank you, Secret Pal! Now, what should I make with it?

I went with my mom to the LYS because she wanted to get some stuff to make a Lucy bag. So I took me thinking they would be happy to wind it for me. After all, I've spent over $200 in there in just the last few weeks, and my mom spent over $50 today. But no! She wound the LL and 1 skein of the Shimmer, then refused to do any more! I was flabbergasted. I mean, I understand the objection, but it just really irritated me.

Just annoying.

But I had a nice weekend. We went down to the lakehouse on Sunday and celebrated my sister's birthday. She really liked her pink Lucy bag.

We took the boat out for a ride, but it was so choppy from all the huge boats and the strong winds that it was really more trouble than it was worth.

I took along the Koigu jaywalker I'm working on. I think she enjoyed the trip.

I can't believe she wouldn't wind it. How rude!!!!!
But trust me...you'll love the winder.

I'm so glad you got the yarn. It's one of my favorites. My rationale was that if you just had to make socks you could make the pair in One Skein (calls for the worsted) but that you could always branch out and try something else. I've made a variety of hats for wee children out of just one skein of it.

I love the shimmer. I need to order some Knit Picks stuff.

I spent a fair deal of money on my ball winder and swift and it was so worth it. There's only so much winding you can do by youself using the back of a chair (or bugging your BF until he holds the yarn). I just have a really basic plastic winder and a wooden swift.

I bought my swift and winder from Joann's Fabrics online and used my 40% coupon. (If you sign up online they'll occassionally send a coupon for online orders.) I LOVE my winder and swift. It's been a year but I think I spent around $65 for both and regular price would have been over $100. Just an idea. :-) Btw, I LOVE the Lorna's Laces colorway. What is the name?

The Lorna's Laces is Bittersweet. Isn't it pretty?

Ooo, pretty yarn. I'm so weak for red yarn. I'm going to have to restrain myself from ordering some of that shimmer.

A swift and ball-winder are life-changing. You need them, so you don't have to put up with snottiness from LYS employees.

Beautiful knit picks yarn! Can't wait to see the clapotis it will make. I'm amazed your LYS wouldn't wind it for you, but I've heard that a few yarn stores will charge you to wind skeins that you buy there, so I guess since you didn't buy it there it's slightly more understandable. Still, common generosity and all . . .

Too bad about the swift situation! From my experience, yarn-store owners seem so protective of their swifts. I can understand that they want us to buy their yarn, but we do buy their yarn! And besides, letting us use the swift means we'll be in the store and more likely to buy something. Your Shimmer looks beautiful, as does the sock you're working on. I'm thinking of starting Jaywalkers soon.

What beautiful shimmer yarn! Wouldn't the LYS even let YOU wind your yarn using their tools? I can understand them not wanting to wind another shops yarn (especially mail order), but "sharing" the their tools would have been the thing to do.

Will you be using the Shimmer double or single stranded for the clapotis? I bet it will turn out just gorgeous!

My LYS has a great winder set-up and if she's too busy to help she'll often recruit another customer to help. It becomes a winding party every time. Her store is filled with joy.

One of my daughter's favorite things is to wind balls for me. I use a lightweight metal and plastic swift because it has less drag than the heavier wooden ones so is better for fine yarns. Remember to wind squishy balls, not tight ones (unless you want to block and stretch the yarn). Sometimes you have to run the yarn through twice.

If I take my ball winder to teen knitting club the kids become mesmerized and have fun winding too fast so the ball flies across the classroom.

I hope your LYS owner mends her ways. --Sylvia

First of all...isn't Shimmer soooo soft? I have some in Turquose Splendor that I haven't chosen a project for yet...

But also...please remember that you are supposed to update at least once a week for SP8!

Thanks! :D

Ooh, Koigu and Clapotis... If I did a brightly colored one, I might have to buy LOTS more clothes in the colors that would "go".

I can believe they wouldn't wind it. Some people just don't get the concept of "added value." You WILL love having your own winder!! I was going to buy yarn at a place and they wouldn't wind it because it was 'close' to closing time. If they hadn't dithered, they'd still have been out on time. So I didn't buy it. I mean really, do we ever actually NEED a particular batch of yarn when we have a huge stash at home!!?
